Winter is the season when we finally take a close look at our floors: 80s tiles that feel icy underfoot, worn-out kitchen linoleum... and the desire to renovate quickly, without dust, before the holidays. Vinyl is often the answer. On one condition: follow two or three rules that become more important than ever in the cold.
Click, glue, LVT, SPC: which one for which situation?
Type
Best for
Good to know
Click LVT vinyl (flexible core)
Bedrooms, living rooms, quick installation
Comfortable and quiet, but requires a perfectly level subfloor.
SPC / rigid click vinyl (mineral core)
Renovation over old tiles, rooms with patio doors
Very stable against temperature fluctuations, better hides minor subfloor imperfections.
Glue-down vinyl
Large areas, commercial spaces
Very stable; more technical installation, reserved for professionals.
Rule no. 1: Acclimatisation is not optional in winter
A box of vinyl that spent the night in a van at 2°C and is installed immediately in a living room at 21°C is a recipe for joints that open or planks that lift a few days later. Vinyl expands and contracts with the temperature.
Leave the packages in the room for at least 48 hours, flat and in their closed packaging (or according to the manufacturer's instructions).
Keep the room between 18 and 25°C before, during, and after installation.
Avoid installing in an unheated room or a cold annex in the middle of January.
Rule no. 2: Underfloor heating, yes, but not at full blast
Vinyl is compatible with most water-based underfloor heating systems. Manufacturers generally require a maximum surface temperature of around 27°C. Beyond that, the material can warp. As with any floor: turn off or lower the heating before installation, then gradually turn it back on. A thin SPC (6 mm) with an underlay compatible with underfloor heating allows heat to pass through well: always check the manufacturer's data sheet.
Wear layer: 0.55 or 0.70 mm?
This is the most important figure on a vinyl data sheet, and the least looked at. The wear layer is the transparent film that protects the design. 0.55 mm is suitable for normal residential use (bedrooms, living rooms). 0.70 mm is recommended for high-traffic rooms: entrances, kitchens, homes with children or pets, and anything subjected to wet boots and gravel in winter. Our 6 mm SPC ranges are available in both versions, including herringbone installation.
Rule no. 3: Large patio doors = watch out for winter sun
The low winter sun strongly heats dark planks near windows, while the rest of the room remains cool. These temperature differences cause the vinyl to move. Solution: choose a rigid SPC, which is more stable, and install blinds or curtains.
Installing vinyl over old tiles: is it possible?
Yes, it is actually one of vinyl's great advantages in Brussels renovations. But:
The tiles must be sound and well-adhered (no tiles sounding hollow).
Wide or deep joints must be filled, otherwise they will eventually show through flexible vinyl (the "telegraphing" effect).
Rigid SPC tolerates joints better than thin LVT.
Check the total height for doors and thresholds.
Is vinyl "cold"?
To the touch, vinyl is significantly less cold than unheated tiles: it does not "pump" the heat from your feet in the same way. With a suitable underlay, it also improves acoustic insulation, a real plus in an apartment. To compare all floors on this point, read our article "Which floor is the warmest?".
See and touch before buying
At the Akdeniz Deco showroom, you can compare our 6 mm SPC vinyls, in classic or herringbone planks, and their wear layers side by side, and leave with your order (customer parking) or have it delivered to Brussels. View our vinyl floors.
FAQ – Vinyl flooring in winter
Can you install vinyl flooring in winter?
Yes, provided you leave the packages to acclimatise for at least 48 hours in the room and maintain a temperature between 18 and 25°C.
Is vinyl compatible with underfloor heating?
Yes, generally with a surface temperature limited to around 27°C and a compatible underlay. Check the manufacturer's data sheet.
Can you install vinyl directly over tiles?
Yes, if the tiles are well-adhered and the marked joints are filled. Rigid SPC vinyl is the most tolerant.
What is the difference between LVT and SPC?
LVT has a flexible core, which is more comfortable; SPC has a rigid mineral core, which is more stable against temperature and subfloor imperfections.
“I want warm floors”: this is the most common request in November. But behind this phrase lie two very different needs. Either you want a floor that is pleasant under bare feet. Or you want a house that heats up well and costs less. And the best floor for one is not necessarily the best for the other.
The “warm” or “cold” sensation: it is not the temperature of the floor
In the same room at 20 °C, tiles and parquet are at the same temperature. Yet, tiles feel cold. Why? Because ceramic conducts heat very well: it “sucks” the heat from your foot. Laminate (with a wood fiber core) and vinyl, on the other hand, conduct it poorly: your foot retains its heat, the floor feels lukewarm.
Remember this simple rule: without underfloor heating, laminate and vinyl feel warmer. With underfloor heating, tiles become the most comfortable, precisely because they transmit heat so well.

Our recommendation, room by room
Entrance hall: tiles, without hesitation. Wet boots, snow salt, gravel: no other floor withstands it as well.
Living room with underfloor heating / heat pump: tiles (large format or wood effect) for performance, or 12 mm laminate parquet compatible with underfloor heating.
Living room with radiators: parquet or vinyl for the sensation of warmth; tiles + a large rug if you prefer easy maintenance.
Bedrooms: laminate parquet or vinyl. You walk on them barefoot, that's where the sensation matters most.
Bathroom: tiles, ideally with a heated mat or a properly sized heated towel rail.
Kitchen: tiles or rigid vinyl, depending on whether you prioritize robustness or comfort.
The real lever for a warm house: what is under the floor
Changing the flooring improves comfort, but it is not what insulates your house. On an uninsulated ground floor slab or above a cellar (very common in Brussels houses), heat escapes through the bottom regardless of the flooring. If you are redoing the floor, it is the ideal time to add insulation or a suitable insulating underlay: that is where the savings are made.
Radiators also count: a properly sized and placed radiator changes the comfort of a room more than a change of flooring. See our radiators.
Wood-effect tiles: the compromise many choose
Warm look of wood, robustness and thermal performance of tiles: it is the most requested solution by Brussels families switching to a heat pump. Come compare the references in the showroom or discover our wood-effect tiles.
FAQ – Which floor is warmer?
Which floor is warmest underfoot?
Without underfloor heating, parquet and vinyl feel the warmest because they conduct little heat. With underfloor heating, tiles become the most comfortable.
Tiles or parquet with a heat pump?
Tiles offer the best performance with low-temperature underfloor heating. Laminate parquet remains possible with a limited surface temperature and a compatible underlay.
How to make tiles feel less cold?
With underfloor heating (water or electric mat), insulation under the slab, or simply rugs in areas where you stand often.
Does vinyl insulate from the cold?
It improves the sensation to the touch and, with an underlay, a little insulation, but it does not replace real floor insulation.

Frequently asked questions {#faq}
What is the price of a radiator installed in Brussels? Allow between €150 and €500 per radiator installed in an existing central heating system, excluding major piping work. The price of the unit alone varies from €50 (entry-level electric) to over €2,000 (high-end inertia or designer cast iron).
Which radiator power should I choose for my room? Allow about 70 to 100 W per m² for a well-insulated home. A 20 m² living room thus requires 1,400 to 2,000 W. This guideline must be adjusted according to the actual insulation and exposure of the room.
Electric radiator or hot water radiator? If you have a boiler or heat pump, the hot water radiator remains the most economical solution to use. In an all-electric home or to heat an isolated room, an inertia electric radiator offers good comfort without piping work.
What VAT rate applies to radiator installation in Brussels? A reduced VAT rate of 6% applies to the renovation of a home over 10 years old used as a primary residence, compared to 21% for new construction.
Can a single radiator be replaced without redoing the entire installation? Yes, replacing a radiator with another on an existing circuit is common and generally does not require major work, unless there is a significant change in power or a switch to a low-temperature heat pump.

Frequently asked questions
Why choose a vinyl flooring specialist in Brussels {#pourquoi}
Vinyl flooring is popular in Brussels renovations because it is easy to install, affordable, and offers a highly realistic wood or stone effect. However, the longevity of the result depends primarily on the preparation of the subfloor: an improperly prepared floor (adhesive residue, unevenness) will quickly develop deformations and lift.

Free and detailed quote, with no obligation
Qualified tradesmen, ten-year liability insurance and professional indemnity insurance
6% VAT applicable to renovations of properties over 10 years old (primary residence)

Vinyl tiles: glue-down or loose-lay installation depending on the format
PVC rolls: economical solution for large areas

Installation on low-temperature underfloor heating: compatible with most vinyl products
Finishing: skirting boards, quarter rounds, door transitions
Before any installation, we check the condition of the existing subfloor: self-levelling compound is applied if the floor has irregularities or adhesive residue from previous flooring.

Frequently asked questions {#faq}
What is the price of vinyl flooring installation in Brussels? Allow between €20 and €45/m² incl. VAT for installed vinyl flooring, including supply and installation. For labour only, loose-lay installation costs €10 to €15/m², glue-down installation €15 to €20/m² and click-lock installation €20 to €35/m².
Is vinyl flooring compatible with underfloor heating? Yes, most vinyl flooring is compatible with low-temperature underfloor heating (max 28°C on the surface). Glue-down installation is recommended for better heat transfer.
Does the floor need to be prepared before installing vinyl flooring? Yes, this is the key step. Self-levelling compound is necessary if the subfloor has irregularities, adhesive residue from previous flooring, or is not sufficiently level.
Planks, tiles or rolls: what is the difference? Click-lock planks (LVT) offer the best parquet effect and can be installed without glue. Tiles are suitable for various patterns. PVC rolls remain the most economical solution for large areas, but require a more technical glue-down installation.
What VAT rate applies to vinyl flooring installation in Brussels? A reduced VAT rate of 6% applies to the renovation of a property over 10 years old used as a primary residence, compared to 21% for new construction.
